We're proud that Universities UK included Middlesex's work as an example of universities supporting the national effort against COVID-19. Their recent report showcases the response from universities across the UK.
Senior technical tutor Nick Weldin and colleagues have joined a nationwide and international drive to make the visors, by organisations and individual technicians and craftspeople, often using 3D printers.The university now has five laser cutters working from 9am-6pm seven days a week to cut out visor headbands, enabling MDX to make over 2000 visors a day.
The visors' simple technology - a piece of acrylic attached to a polypropylene headstrap - means they can be produced much more quickly than medical masks, which are in short supply globally. We’re also looking to manufacture other things the NHS needs.
We have also started producing gowns and scrubs for NHS workers.
We are working with Health Education England to deploy up to 500 of our amazing second and third nursing and midwifery students to extended clinical placements on the frontline. This response includes stepping up some of our third year finalists onto the government’s emergency register, should that be needed.
All MDX second and third year nursing and midwifery students will either be in practice, in our North Central London partner trusts such as the Whittington, Royal Free and Moorfields Eye Hospital, or returning to practice during the crisis.
Our Nursing and Midwifery Department has been working with Capital Nurse, a programme to ensure excellent nursing is delivered collaboratively across London to meet healthcare needs. 96 first year students have volunteered for this so far.
We've joined the IPC (International Parking Community) of companies and organisations who can offer parking facilities to NHS Staff, Health And Social Care Workers And Volunteer Responders to make their journey to work easier at this very difficult time.
Our car park details, along with many others, have been put on a central database for NHS Staff, Health And Social Care Workers And Volunteer Responders to use to locate and book a free parking space.

Parliament’s Knowledge Exchange Unit is creating a COVID-19 Outbreak Expert Database for areas of specialist knowledge where Parliament may need access to research expertise. Middlesex researchers have been offering themselves and their research groups to support the effort. Our staff are also ensuring that they respond to calls for help in their own disciplines as the academic community comes together to address the crisis.
Our researchers are investigating ways of repurposing existing innovations arising from research in medical device technology to meet the national need for easily deployed solutions. Fresh collaborations with other researchers around the world are being coordinated from Middlesex.

We have a wide variety of equipment and resource that can be made available to support the NHS, social care and other frontline organisations responding to the coronavirus crisis.
We have laboratory testing equipment, laboratory supplies (including gloves, lab spectacles and other equipment), and equipment for fabrication that can be used by our staff to make the supplies needed for the frontline – from 3D printers and laser cutters to sewing machines, fashion studios and television and film production facilities.
